The DML2000 Magnetic Locator quickly and easily pinpoints buried iron and steel pipe, survey markers, water valves, water meters, manhole covers, steel septic tanks and most concrete septic tanks. But, in some cases, a septic tank can be elusive.

When Mag Snake is used along with a Dunham & Morrow DML2000 magnetic locator you can be certain that you will always find your septic tank.
Mag Snake consists of an extremely powerful permanent magnet welded to the end of a durable stainless steel fish tape. Designed with ruggedness in mind, Mag Snake is available in both 100 and 200 foot lengths. The large molded handle and manual rewind mechanism makes it both dependable and easy to use. With Mag Snake you can trace sewer pipe buried as deep as 9’ below ground level and find any septic tank steel, concrete or plastic. Simply feed the Mag Snake header into the pipe and follow the header with your DML2000 magnetic locator as it progresses. As the header moves through the pipe the DML2000 will detect two frequency peaks, one in front and another behind the header. The easiest way to trace the header is to follow the second peak and when the magnetic header tips over and drops into the tank this signal peak will increase dramatically and then slowly decrease as the header descends. To maximize your locating effort hold the instrument as shown to the left. And, as usual, it is essential to make yourself magnetically clean. While using the DML2000 magnetic locator you should avoid wearing shoes with steel toe protectors or steel arch supports. In addition, keep all vehicles and personnel carrying ferrous tools such as shovels or picks away from the search area.

As a general rule all steel and many concrete tanks will not require the Mag Snake and can be located just by using the DML2000 with the sensitivity control set to position 4 or higher.

However, for deep tanks and particularly plastic tanks Mag Snake can often be the difference between a successful locate and an expensive, unrewarding experience. When using the MS100/200 Mag Snake it is essential that the operator is magnetically clean and the DML2000 sensitivity control set to position 6.
